How to Apply a Passion for Physics to Software Development
The world of software is an exciting, large, and fast-paced field with an incredible number of niches for people from a wide range of backgrounds. I will share how a physics education helped me contribute to software projects in the aerospace, film, automotive, and robotics industries. I built the foundation for my career at the University of Winnipeg, which ultimately led to my current role as a software developer at NVIDIA, where I work on simulation problems. Using my education and career path as an example, I will highlight general principles that can help others navigate their own paths into the software industry.
Bio: Michael Honke completed an Honours Bachelor's degree in Physics at the University of Winnipeg in 2017 under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Bidinosti. During that time, he worked on computational methods for MRI simulation while developing an interest in GPU programming. He went on to earn a Master of Mathematics (Computer Science) from the University of Waterloo in 2020, where he conducted research in computational fluid simulation methods under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Batty. After graduating, Michael joined Ziva Dynamics, a Vancouver-based startup, where he contributed to the development of the Ziva VFX creature simulation software used in film and video games. Following Ziva's acquisition by Unity in 2022, he joined NVIDIA, where he works on simulation methods for training autonomous vehicles and mobile robots.
This talk will take place via Zoom. Feel free to watch the colloquium with other audience members in room 3M63, or tune in remotely. Please email: an.wiebe@uwinnipeg.ca for a copy of the Zoom link.
